Description
Santa Fe is one of the top three art markets in the United States with over 200 galleries and a handful of museums. The New Mexico Museum of Art is the oldest art museum in the state of New Mexico. It is an iconic architectural landmark in downtown Santa Fe, also a place that embodies both architecture and art, two of the cornerstones of Santa Fe’s essential identity.Take a look at the massive buttresses, rounded corners and openings, the tail ends of vigas (roof beams) that dot the facade.
The Museum is one of four state-run museums in Santa Fe that are part of the Museum of New Mexico system operated by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. Designed by Isaac Rapp and built in 1917, it is an example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture, and one of Santa Fe's best-known representations of the synthesis of Native American and Spanish Colonial design styles.
Many of the works that were exhibited on opening day are still part of the permanent art collection. A good variety of rotating exhibitions are also presented throughout the year. And don’t miss the courtyard, which is dotted with murals by William Shuster. These frescoes, which were commissioned by the Federal Emergency Relief Agency in 1934, were created to honor the Pueblo Indians.
