Description
Two Buddhist Novices in Myanmar.
These two Buddhist novices in red robes who take a break from their training in the monastery like to pose for a photograph.
In Myanmar/Burma it’s customary for every young boy to enter a Buddhist monastery, most boys become novices between the ages of five and 15. Novice monks can live in the monastery for as little as one week, although some will remain for years. Once they reach adulthood, boys can decide whether they want to become fully ordained monks.
Men are supposed to enter the monkhood twice in their lives, once as a novice, and once as a fully ordained monk any time after their 20th birthday.
Selective color, texture overlay.
I took the photo near Bagan, Myanmar, 1996.
