Description
The Lord of Time - Kala Bhairava.
Kala Bhairava, or Kala Bhairav, is one of the most important deities in Nepal, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike. The statue of Kala Bhairav, or Black Bhairav, behind the Jagannath Temple in the Kathmandu Durbar Square, shows Shiva in his most fearsome form. Kala Bhairav wears a garland of skulls, has six arms and stands on a dead body of a demon. The artwork is one of the largest 17th century stone statues in Kathmandu, it represents the terrifying aspect of Lord Shiva.
It is believed that to tell a lie in front of Kala Bhairav will instantly lead to death, and disagreements in the past would be resolved here. Bhairav is invoked in prayers to destroy enemies.
Photograph was taken 1994.
The Statue was not destroyed during the Nepal earthquake 2015.
