Description
Ladybird On California Blue Sage.
The ladybird is appreciated for its usefulness and is considered a symbol of happiness and good luck. The name ladybird also refers to this: Because of their usefulness for agriculture, the farmers believed that the beetles were a gift from the Virgin Mary and named them after her. The seven-point ladybird is called "Maria's key maid" in Sweden, Marienkaefer in Germany. The reasons why the seven-point ladybird is the best-known and most popular beetle species range from its frequency over a period of thousands of years, its striking coloration, its joy of flying and increasing mobility on warm human skin, the number seven as a sacred symbol and the association of the color red with love.
Cleveland Sage/California Blue Sage is a beautiful, fast growing and highly aromatic perennial plant, a species of sage native to the coast of southern California and northern Baja California. Its common names include Blue sage, Fragrant sage, and Cleveland sage. It is a small, hairy, grey-green shrub native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities of the region. It has wrinkly textured leaves with tiny ridged teeth along the edges and it bears plentiful rounded flower clusters of tubular lavender to dark purple flowers with long stamens. It is tolerant of a variety of soils, although performs better in well drained soils. Hummingbirds and insects are very attracted to this plant.
The plant was named in 1874 by Asa Gray, honoring plant collector Daniel Cleveland.
