Description
Wine Growing - Distinct Soil Types.
Situated just off historic Westside Road, Baker Ridge Vineyard is located in the Middle Reach region of the Russian River Valley on a ridgeline overlooking the river. Baker Ridge Vineyard consists of 26.5 planted acres of primarily Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with small blocks of excellent Viognier and Grenache.
The ridge predominantly runs northwest to southeast, and is made up of a series of rolling hills that present the vineyards in a multitude of aspects. In addition, it offers at least four distinct soil types, from rocky to sandy loam to blocks with more silty clay. All of the soils offer excellent drainage. The overall diversity of aspect and soil type, in addition to the variety of clones and rootstocks, delivers an outstanding level of complexity in the fruit harvested from Thomas George Estate vineyards.
I took the soils photograph at the welcoming decorated counter of Thomas George Estate, Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California.
